White Noise Stories Volume One By: Tammy Vreeland |
Lauren finally fulfills her dreams of having her own apartment in the city. However, dreams are a funny thing. They can be your answer but more often than not, a question.
In this case, the apartment is Lauren's answer and yet it brings up the question on how is she going to deal with all the noise? Whether it be a dog barking, a baby screaming or simply the noise coming up off the street, it is all too much!
Finally, Lauren finds relief when she purchases a sound machine that plays white noise which drowns out all the noise around her. Perfect! Or, so she thought.
Lauren begins to have strange dreams. Unlike most of her dreams that she cannot remember, these dreams stay with her. Haunt her. Become part of her. Is the white noise giving her access to other people's dreams? People who have died. Can souls dream in death?
Lauren dreams 13 individual dreams. With each one she finds herself drifting ever closer to the mouth of madness.
The Pound: The pound is based on an actual dream of my own. A sad disturbing dream. Very short in content, it briefly explains how a soul may have to wait once it is abandoned.
Sissy: A young woman struggles all her life over the haunting of her sister. Hopefully, now that she is away from that dreadful house and into her new apartment she will find peace.
Shadow People: Often times during the night when I close my eyes I see shadows moving around. Quite unsettling. In the story, a woman afraid of the dark experiences the same from when she lived in a house where a group of hippies simply disappeared.
Lullaby: A middle age woman going through the change begins to find herself hallucinating. She is contacted by a woman who wants to meet with her. Perhaps, what this woman can reveal about her past will explain the changes she is going through now.
Colors That Bleed: A struggling artist is given a new paint brush for his birthday that gives his paintings a new depth.
The Fallen: This story was actually based on when my son, Tyler, had knee surgery. His doctor told me that they may have to use cadaver parts (fortunately they did not) but in the story the main character does and has unusual side effects.
DNA and Me: For a short time I got into a kick of finding out my ancestry and my own DNA. I was surprised to see my results put me in a very limited group of people who have Neanderthal ties. This, of course, gave me the idea for this story.
Bling: This story is based on my Harley Davidson motorcycle. Something I am very proud of and they only made 700 in the color I have. Because of its uniqueness, I figured I could make a story out of it. I did name my bike Bling due to all the chrome it has. It is the ultimate Bling I have :)
Home Cooked Dinner: A tongue in cheek story about how hard it is to find a good dinner while on vacation.
Virtual Death: I had just gotten the VR for Playstation and was amazed at what it could do. It led me to wonder where video games would eventually take us?
Mirror Images: This one is my favorite short story and one I still wonder if I should not have made a full story in itself. Twins going to therapy due to not getting along. However, the research involves the possibility of Dopplegangers actually being nothing more than a mirror image.
End of the Line: Yet another story based on one of my sad dreams. One that I woke up crying from and to this day is hard for me to read without getting upset. A journey one must travel in death.
BACKGROUND
White Noise Stories is a collection of short stories. While working on a full novel, I decided to take a break and gather some ideas I had for my next books.
There is only so much time in a day, I decided to take these ideas and create short stories. Then take the short stories and make a collection out of them.
To be honest, this was much harder than I first thought. You would think you could just throw the stories into one book and be done. Not true.
Since I have such a varied taste in writing ideas, to make this book flow nicely, I needed to put stories together that were similar.
Then of course I had to create the stories from the ideas I had. Once I was finished, throwing those stories into a collection alone did not feel right.
So, I created a story around the other stories. To do this, I had to go back and take a couple of stories away and create new ones to help keep the main story flowing.
I feel now, I have a nice template in which I will be able to continue with the main story and add new short stories creating a Volume Two (or perhaps more).
These are the first short stories I have ever written. Although, a cool idea to be able to get several ideas onto paper, a very challenging one as well.
As always, I try and give my readers fresh and unique stories. This being my 7th book I was able to throw out 13 + 1 new stories to hold you for a while.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I did writing them.

Ok. So. You have read all of Stephen King's works, Ray Bradbury's, Poe's, Lovecraft's... But have you read Vreeland? White Noise is a good start. After chatting with her and remembering she is an author she suggested I start with White Noise Vol.1. I did and I enjoyed it. First of all I enjoyed the format of the book. It is a complete story with short stories to make the whole.
2. I like the different angles she approaches each short story. If you are looking for Wes Craven gore, well you may be a bit disappointed. However there is a great deal of intellectual gore to intrigue the brain. Thoughts and images that swirl in the stories will swirl in your mind.
I enjoyed it and can't wait to read Vol.2.
You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 starsA fear packed horror story..

Do you lay, frozen in bed, gazing at darken corners sure something has been looking back at you?!!! If you do maybe you better pass this book up. If not be prepared for a trip into the macabre supernatural.
Fresh, innovated and scary as "Heck."
A collection of creep story ideas with an innocent victim being taken over.
It's a story better than I have seen from any horror writer in a long time. Miss Vreeland also nails the hardest part of a story, the ending. I cannot wait for the next Volume.
Miss V knocked Mr. Koontz and S. King out of the park...Long Live the Queen of Horror.
P.S. I've always been afraid of mirrors at night...Thanks...
