Tailor
By: Tammy Vreeland
John is a small town reporter who has been given the chance of a lifetime. The notorious serial killer,Taylor the Tailor, has requested him personally to write her life story. The catch is John has only three days before Taylor is to be electrocuted to interview her.
During those three days, John unravels a story like no other. Overwhelmed in just the first interview, John turns to his young assistant Lauren for help. Lauren readily agrees and heads to Taylor's hometown to come up with cold hard facts to help make Taylor's story a credible one.
However, both Lauren and John quickly realize that Taylor's tale may not be that easy to prove. Although, both of them are skeptics at heart, they quickly realize that Taylor's story is not an easy one to understand or believe. Especially with its supernatural undertones.
John's interviews start off with Taylor's childhood and to his horror John realizes that Taylor had begun to kill as early as the age of four with her first victim being her father. As Taylor grows up, her list of victims increases as her skills for being "The Tailor" sharpens.
Tim, Taylor's brother, had been institutionalized at a very young age. Upon being released, Tim changed his name so as not to be connected with Taylor in any fashion. Unfortunately, due to Taylor's impending doom, Tim finds himself thrown back into Taylor's world.
Tim and Lauren team up to try and put a stop to Taylor's evil once and for all. Yet all three of them question why Taylor wants her story to be told now? Is it to seek redemption for all the bad deeds she has done, knowing her time is limited? Maybe it's to brag to the world about how much she got away with and how she did it? Or is it something so much darker that none of them will find out until the third day at the strike of midnight?
PROLOGUE
All the women gathered around Anne to watch her open her presents. It had turned out to be such a nice baby shower. One by one, Anne opens the presents with all the women ooohing and ahhing over each item.
The next present is a huge box with beautiful gold wrapping. Anne gently sits it on her lap, as she does the baby kicks. Anne laughs, "Wow this one must be really special even the baby is excited!" All the women laugh along with her.
Carrie, Anne's best friend, is keeping track of all the cards. As Anne opens the box, Carrie asks for the card. Anne stops and looks all around and says, "This one doesn't seem to have one?"
Carrie looks around on the floor and agrees, "Yea, you're right. Maybe its inside the box?" Looking around at all the women, no one admits the present is theirs.
Anne takes all the wrapping off and slowly opens the present. The women wait in anticipation. Anne looks inside the box with a puzzled look. She goes to bring the item out for all to see but with the first touch, she quickly takes her hand back in repulsion.
Not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings, Anne wills herself to pick up the item for all to see. The room suddenly gets quite. Carrie takes the box from Anne and tries to break the silence, "Wow that's something. I've never seen anything quite like it!"
"I haven't either, you should feel it...it feels like it is real!" Anne hands it to Carrie.
Carrie goes to take it but almost drops it the moment she feels it. Concerned Carrie asks, "You don't think it is, do you?"
Anne shrugs her shoulders and answers, "I don't know." It is the damnest thing she had ever seen. It is a full size teddy bear that is about two feet tall. The coloring is beautiful and the craftsmanship is remarkable. But the fur is long and feels like some sort of animal hair, and the eyes, or lack of eyes, make it look even stranger.
Looking it over and trying to be nice, Carrie replies, "Well at least whoever made this was thoughtful enough to sew over the eyes." Carrie pokes at where the eyes should be, "Yea, it seems like the eyes are there they just must have wanted to make it baby proof that was thoughtful."
Carrie hands it back to Anne. Anne positions it on her lap looking out at the ladies in the room. Again, the baby moves but this time it feels like a hand is trying to come out and grab for the teddy bear.
BACKGROUND
I found Tailor to be a little tricky for me. My goal was to tell a story in the present and yet portray the past as present as well. It was tough but I think I made it work.
I wanted to take the concept of the perfect little girl from the old movie The Bad Seed and have her grow up. What would she become? It was obvious that she would become a serial killer, but why?
I needed to explore the avenues of, was it because of her environment? Was it because of genetic makeup? Or maybe put a twist on it of my own? Tailor definitely has several twists and I was quite pleased that I seem to be able to keep the reader guessing right up to the end.
Tailor is a completely different type of story than my first book, The Folks. This is what I try to strive for, something fresh, new and unique.

John, a small town reporter, just got the chance of a lifetime. Taylor the Tailor, a young female serial killer, has asked him to write her life story. John becomes a little worried, he only has 3 days to interview her before her execution. Within moments of his interview with Tailor, he realizes that this story may be more than he ever bargained for. He decides to promote his assistant, Lauren, to co-writer and to also help him look for the facts. Just when he thinks things couldn't get any stranger, things take a turn to pure insane. Being the skeptic he is, he has no clue how he is going to publish this book and anyone actually believe it is real. As the interview progresses, things are starting to check out on Lauren's side concerning dates, times, and strange "accidents" that can not be explained. From what he can tell, Taylor has been telling him the truth about her victims, but if she is tell the truth about that, can everything she is telling him be true? John keeps asking why Taylor chose him to write her story, which she stresses that all that needs to be known will be told and understood when the time is right. Taylor has freaked John out to the point that he doesn't know if he can continue the interview, but has to know how the story ends. The question is, will he be prepared for what the end holds?
The book is full of twist and turns. The author used lots of imagination on this storyline and made sure that everything matched up and was explained. I do have to say, I did figure out part of the twist at the end, but the author made sure to add a little extra for those that may have thought they had it all figured out. Yes, she got me too.
I am a true horror and suspense fan, if you are too, I recommend you check out this book. Be advised, due to some of the content and situations in the book, I would recommend it as an adult read or for a mature audience.

This book was so twisted, but in a good way. Tammy Vreeland may be new to the world of novels but her idea's and story lines are like a seasoned novelist. I was surprised and a little bit disturbed by this book, isn't that how all good horror/sci-fi is supposed to make you feel?

TAILOR is a slight diversion from her White Noise series. After reading this I wonder how she sleeps at night with these story lines running around it that head of hers. Seriously, this is not your usual horror story. It could very well be true on certain levels. Ms. Vreeland does with a teddy bear what Stephen King does with clowns and dolls. I truly like the way she has spun this tale into an intricate cloth to be tailored to fit you nightmares. Enjoy!
“Tailor” an Electrifying Horror Novel by Tammy Vreeland
Review by Delightfully Demented
Author of five horror novels, each one uniquely terrifying; I present “Tailor”, a delectable little ditty about a nasty little girl. The “Bad Seed” has grown up; and woe to anyone who crosses her path.
Tammy writes in a wonderfully smooth style mixed with terrifying and disturbing visions, along with just the right amount of gore. Her characters are so real, we feel we know them well; too well at times. She allows us access deep into their minds. And these insights can be at times truly horrifying.
Enter Taylor; an average little girl, perfect, tidy and mature beyond her years. On the outside, she’s the perfect daughter, but underneath, she’s quite different. And, she has a “friend”; a rather extraordinary sort of teddy bear, with no eyes. This bear, ugly and disgusting to everyone except Taylor, seems to act as her protector. Or is it more than that? As we “watch” her child-hood (told through flashbacks); we find that she is cold, ruthless and heartless. And as she reaches adult-hood her list of victims increase, and her true identity begins to show. She acquires a nickname, “Taylor the Tailor” as she sharpens her skills as a serial killer. How does one become so coldblooded and cruel? What “creates” such a grisly monster? This book gives us food for thought about these individuals; are they the way they are because of their environment? Or is it genetic makeup? Perhaps it is something else; something truly diabolical and outside everyday common realities.
The story is recounted through flashbacks; memories Taylor recounts to small-town reporter, John, who is visiting her during her final three days on death row. Not shy at all; she takes great pleasure in recounting how she tortured and killed her victims, and we begin to find out what lies deep within her psyche.
Why is Taylor so eager to have her story told? Is this a story of redemption? Is she merely bragging about how brutally she treated her victims…or is it something even more sinister? Have to wait until the stroke of midnight on the third day to find out.
Perhaps you think I’m giving too much away; au contraire…this is merely the enticing aroma of dread that makes you want more. Tammy offers some interesting twists and turns throughout the book from start to finish, and just when you think you've figured it out; you realize there’s something more. Much more. And I don’t think you’ll look at teddy bears quite the same either.

A Great Horror Book, December 10, 2008

This is definitely a read for the serious horror book fanatic. Tammy writes in a calming manner and quickly moves on with an intensifying and truly frightening ending. I have read both of Tammy’s books and found them to be “fearfully” fun. I can’t wait for her next book. A great writer…

"Pleasantly Surprised..."
If you could sum up Tailor in three words, what would they be?
Unusual, unique and disturbing
What was one of the most memorable moments of Tailor?
When Tim has his first interview with Lauren.
What about Tammy Vreeland’s performance did you like?
I'll be honest I almost didn't get this due to the comments about the narration. I listened to the sample and knew what I was getting into. The reader was just as the sample, no slurring words, no heavy breathing, just simple reading. It may not have been a full blown out production but I enjoyed it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did because I wasn't sure where it was going and then I figured the ending but she took it a step farther which I really liked.
Any additional comments?
Listen to the sample so you know what you are getting. As for the story I had thought it would be more of a murder/mystery due to the listing but it was darker... should have probably been put in Thriller or Horror.
